Sometimes you just have to get back to basics.
Healthy eating. Regular exercise. Plenty of sleep.
A while back, I was on a nice little bit of fitness and dieting. I lost 45 pounds, and was feeling pretty good. Even the badgers thought I looked leaner and more heroic, and built me a new treadmill so that I could go for a run without getting lost.
Ironically, it was taking a few weeks off work for the Olympics that knocked me off the wagon. There I was, sitting on the sofa rather a lot, enjoying the grandeur of London's Finest Hour, and I started reaching for the phone.
A medium meaty pizza? Extra olives and jalapeños? Diet Coke?
Yes Sir, thirty minutes!
And after I fell off the wagon, it backed up over me a few times just make sure I couldn't get back on. I could still reach the phone, but was short of breath.
A large pizza? Garlic bread? Chicken dippers? Dr. Pepper?
Yes Sir, twenty minutes!
It dawned on me that, other than putting quite a bit of the weight back on (and encouraging the pizza house to deliver faster) I was slow, tired and lacking enthusiasm for creative work. Also, my good friend Kato in Toronto was poised to eat healthily for 30 days, and I do like to support my friends in their endeavours.
So, I hailed a taxi, caught the wagon up, and heaved myself back on it.
Wish me luck with my new mantra... *
Thirty days is just the start; but it's a nice achievable target, and I do so like those. As someone smart once said:
Most folk don't need a Diet, they need a change of Lifestyle.
This, I believe, is Wisdom.
But that doesn't mean I have to like it.
One step at a time, right?
[ * BTW, do you like my t-shirt? That's Pearl on it, that is. You know Pearl right? The tee is a limited edition of 23. It's a full colour print (not a transfer), there's tons of different styles, so click here quick if you want a piece of Pearly history. ]
